Introduction to the Region

The Argyll region covers from Arrochar on Loch Long at the southern border to Loch Lochy at the northern border. There are five salmon and two trout farming companies within Argyll and Lochaber with a total of 70 sites signed up to area management agreements. Currently there are 4 signed area management agreements and one additional unsigned agreement.

Argyll and Lochaber river systems are classically smaller spate rivers which are home to small numbers of salmon and trout, due to these smaller populations the fish are therefore more sensitive to pressures such as habitat disruption, genetic degradation, poor marine survival and over fishing. As a result of these pressures Argyll and Lochaber rivers are in variable state of health, some rivers such as the Awe in Argyll and the Lochy in Lochaber are quite successful rivers where viable fisheries still operate, whilst some other rivers in the region no longer support sustainable salmonid populations.
